nutmeg maple cookies

well the busy weekend is coming to its close... busy that is with the exception of friday nite. friday nite was a fire, movie and baking cookies. perfection!
i recommend giving these a try:
1 c unsalted butter at room temp
1 c granulated sugar
{beat in large bowl until light + fluffy}
1/2 c maple syrup
1 large egg yolk
{mix into butter + sugar slowly}
3 c all-purpose flour
1 tsp freshly grated nutmeg
1 + 1/4 tsp kosher salt
{mix dry ingredients in separate bowl. add to butter mixture until just combined. gather together and wrap with plastic wrap. chill for at least 2 hrs and up to 4 days. preheat oven 350. line baking sheets with parchment paper. on a floured counter, roll out dough and cut into desired shapes. bake 10-12 minutes or until golden on the edges. cool + enjoy}
 happy fall!

home is where the waffles are

so i am currently blogging whilst youve got mail is playing in the background. this is my second movie of the day. first was fantastic mr fox. dont you love days like this? a day off in the middle of the week. a real day off. its like the thing of fairytales and bedtime stories.
i love being at home. its safe and cozy. a place to relax and just be yourself. to have a break from being "on." dont get me wrong, i love my work as a hairstylist. it brings me so much joy to be in the salon with the energy + creativity flowing. but at times, its taxing. talk, talk, talk, talk... then talk some more. and im a talker. so when i need a break, you know its bad.
today was different. a thursday at home with my hubby + a few friends. we made brunch. mmm.
daniel made waffles. his waffles. for those of you that know him, you know this is significant. it happens once a year {if youre fortunate} and is like eating an airy cloud laced with yeasty, buttery deliciousness. he makes the batter the nite before to rise overnite and pairs them with a warm berry compote + vanilla whipped cream. i juiced grapefruits + oranges for mimosas and made french pressed coffee. contributions from friends were: croque monsieur. goats milk yogurt with pumpkin granola + blueberries. egg, sausage + cheddar frittata. and last but not least, ingredients to make a cocktail we so wittily {is that a word??} named "its bourbon thyme."
its bourbon thyme:
in 8 oz glass add:
1 shot orange juice
1 shot fresh lemon juice
1 shot bourbon
in martini shaker muddle few sprigs of thyme + 1 shot maple syrup
pour mixture from glass into shaker
shake, pour, add thyme as garnish
{pictured below!!}
happy mid week time off to all, enjoy!!

more romance of the fifties

and the anniversary celebration continues: saturday nite my family + a few friends put together a intimate party of hor d'ouevres + cocktails for my grandparents 60th wedding anniversary.
my mom was able to get their original wedding cake top and a photograph of the cake. we had a duplication created for the event. yes, friends, the below wedding cake top is 60 years old and it is even more special now than on the day of the wedding, is it not? it now represents a marriage that has stood the test of time, one marked by love + loyalty. it has had its ups and downs. it has weathered storms. it is a well built house.

mondays are mad

the mondays of my life lately have been a little hard to take...
without going into too many boring + personal details, lemme just say: they are long. eleven and a half hrs long from start to finish. and they are rushed + mentally draining. but monday nite when the clock strikes 730 pm i am done. finished. finito. checked out. my journal and hedgehog mug of tea beckon me, along with my lap top full of unseen pins. have i ever mentioned my love affair with pinterest? oh pinterest how i love thee...
hoping everyone survived their mondays and found at least a sliver of quiet time.
happy new week to all!
ps. i forgot to say there was a fire in the fireplace involved as well. how could i forget that?? its like the single most vital aspect to the monday wind-down after all. my hubby channelled his inner lumberjack and we had a fire with real firewood, yipee for not the fake log kind of fire ;)

a flurry of snapshots

 our trip to portland was a collaborative effort...
friends who have been + our personal research merged and resulted in a rather lengthy to-do list. as we only had 2 full days, we tried our best to narrow our list down to the must-sees which included mothers bistro {as recommended by a friend: get the wild salmon hash. trust me. no regrets}, powells, eastside breweries {cascade specializes in sours that knock your socks off}, voodoo donuts {captain crunch donut was my fave} + the saturday street market. as we pitter-pattered around the city we added little gems we found along the way.
what personality portland has! it is urban + hipster... too cool for school, if you will. however, what makes portland special is that its coolness doesnt take away from its friendly, down-to-earth vibe. probably the friendliest city we have ever explored. so even though our adventure was short it definitely was sweet

romance of the fifties

november 8, 2012 is the 60th wedding anniversary of my grandparents
this month...{and next} is going to be a month of celebration!
so more updates are to come... this is the first of the upcoming festivities:
together with one of my very best friends and her husband we worked on a delicious dinner in honor of them and their beautiful marriage. the evening was filled with story telling and laughter {especially because they have an adorable 10 month old baby boy who entertained us for hours!}
the cocktail hour:
martinis {ala my bartending father} or champagne
marscapone + lemon curd filled dates drizzled with balsamic vinegar
individual glasses of vege medley + hummus
the main course:
white or red wine
sea bass with mediterranean tapenade
grilled tri-tip
mashed potato with carmelized shallots
sauteed zuchinni
bleu cheese, dried cranberry + poppy seed tossed salad
selection of cupcakes, cake pops, bonbons + cookies
here are some snippets from the nite!
