winter in the caribbean

home again, home again... booohoooo.
sailing in the middle of the sea is just what you need to unwind and get away from the grind. at sea days was lovely time to be with family and have quiet time to sunbathe, relax and reflect. on island days we didnt have much time so we were on the go exploring and adventuring (i dont know if thats a word but if not i think it should be!)

here are some of the highlights of our last ten days:

     //sailing away from fort lauderdale, florida, usa//

// bonaire//
// grenada//
// dominica//
//st. thomas//
// bahamas//
a few more details about our trip yet to come...
hope all had a wonderful weekend and happy sunday!

tomorrow, i could kiss you

thats me under that tree... can you see me? thats me splashing in those calm topaz waters... do you see me? i know, im not actually in the picture but im doing visualization exercises.

tomorrow nite daniel and i are on the red eye to florida to take a cruise thru the caribbean. oh ya baby. we are continuing the celebration of my grandparents 60th with my parents and my grandma on my dads side (who fabulously organized the cruise for us, thanks gram!)

we board then its 2 days at sea til we hit aruba (thats aruba in the pic above... you know, the one with me in it waving, "hi friends!") from there we do 5 more: bonaire (netherland antilles), grenada, dominica, st thomas + princess cays (bahamas).

im glad that we are 2 days at sea first so that my body can tell my brain that its time to rest, im on vacation, a real one. we usually take the kinds of trips that are adventures. GO GO GO til you collapse. which, i happen to love. but this kind of trip is welcome. welcome trip!! the kind of trip thats a vacation. where "relax" is my middle name. maybe i should go by that on the cruise?? ... maybe not. anyways, the point is, i will have time for family, time for daniel, and time for me. time to read a book!! this excites me greatly.

so bon voyage for now, heres to sailing the seas...

friday nites

i love friday nites at home. its where i want to be after work on friday nite, especially when its raining. yaay its finally raining!

so on this lovely friday nite at home...

we are sitting fireside watching shop around the corner (for the first time!!)

youve got mail is based on shop around the corner and i have wanted to see it for oh so long but havent gotten around to it. "shes very beautiful... but no book." ahhh. so fantastic. watch it. i know youll love it. im blogging and having a glass of chardonnay. living the high life tonite my friends ;)

happy friday!

a few lovely things (and twas a lovely monday)

    1. because my anthro catalog came
    (and these "measuring hedgies" were on the first page.... i know.)
 2. because i rebelled against my planner and spent some of the cloudy day in bed.
   3. because i lost myself reading wildwood (more on wildwood later.)
4. because i made hot cocoa with peppermint whipped cream with these new trader joes finds.
5. because the fruits of last weeks cyber monday arrived. and yes, that is a reindeer with a faux fur tutu.

   happy tuesday!

"adventure may hurt you but monotony will kill you."

i have a fear. irrational fear? could be. but its a fear nonetheless.

monotony: wearisome uniformity or lack of variety, as in occupation or scenery.
now, dont get me wrong, my life is not boring. its busy. i love my apartment, my job, my friends, my family. daniel and i are a great duo. we are a team and we love adventures. hes calm and im enthusiastic. hes laid back and im energetic. hes my roots and im his wings.

despite this i still worry. will i always live in california? i know that we have our trips... thats one of the things that gets me thru. i focus on our trips, past and present. but will we ever live anywhere else? i always say i want to move, but when it comes right down to it, could i leave my family? whats more important, new experience or being with those you love? experiences shape who you are, who you will be. but family makes life experiences have meaning.

i guess i dont really know the answer. im just throwing it out there into the universe. to quote youve got mail: im sending this cosmic question into the void.
goodnite, dear void ;)

nutmeg maple cookies

well the busy weekend is coming to its close... busy that is with the exception of friday nite. friday nite was a fire, movie and baking cookies. perfection!
i recommend giving these a try:
1 c unsalted butter at room temp
1 c granulated sugar
{beat in large bowl until light + fluffy}
1/2 c maple syrup
1 large egg yolk
{mix into butter + sugar slowly}
3 c all-purpose flour
1 tsp freshly grated nutmeg
1 + 1/4 tsp kosher salt
{mix dry ingredients in separate bowl. add to butter mixture until just combined. gather together and wrap with plastic wrap. chill for at least 2 hrs and up to 4 days. preheat oven 350. line baking sheets with parchment paper. on a floured counter, roll out dough and cut into desired shapes. bake 10-12 minutes or until golden on the edges. cool + enjoy}
 happy fall!

home is where the waffles are

so i am currently blogging whilst youve got mail is playing in the background. this is my second movie of the day. first was fantastic mr fox. dont you love days like this? a day off in the middle of the week. a real day off. its like the thing of fairytales and bedtime stories.
i love being at home. its safe and cozy. a place to relax and just be yourself. to have a break from being "on." dont get me wrong, i love my work as a hairstylist. it brings me so much joy to be in the salon with the energy + creativity flowing. but at times, its taxing. talk, talk, talk, talk... then talk some more. and im a talker. so when i need a break, you know its bad.
today was different. a thursday at home with my hubby + a few friends. we made brunch. mmm.
daniel made waffles. his waffles. for those of you that know him, you know this is significant. it happens once a year {if youre fortunate} and is like eating an airy cloud laced with yeasty, buttery deliciousness. he makes the batter the nite before to rise overnite and pairs them with a warm berry compote + vanilla whipped cream. i juiced grapefruits + oranges for mimosas and made french pressed coffee. contributions from friends were: croque monsieur. goats milk yogurt with pumpkin granola + blueberries. egg, sausage + cheddar frittata. and last but not least, ingredients to make a cocktail we so wittily {is that a word??} named "its bourbon thyme."
its bourbon thyme:
in 8 oz glass add:
1 shot orange juice
1 shot fresh lemon juice
1 shot bourbon
in martini shaker muddle few sprigs of thyme + 1 shot maple syrup
pour mixture from glass into shaker
shake, pour, add thyme as garnish
{pictured below!!}
happy mid week time off to all, enjoy!!
